- The long-tailed macaque is the most arboreal of the four species and the stump-tailed macaque the most terrestrial.
- The three species of macaque which are most commonly kept in laboratories all originate from Asia: Macaca mulatta (the rhesus monkey), Macaca fascicularis (the long-tailed, crab-eating or cynomolgus macaque) and Macaca arctoides (the stump-tailed or bear macaque).
