In this case, the mixture shall be classified as a specific target organ toxicant (specific organ specified), following single exposure, repeat exposure, or both when at least one ingredient has been classified as a Category 1 or Category 2 specific target organ toxicant and is present at or above the appropriate generic concentration limit as laid out in Table 3.9.4 for Category 1 and 2 respectively.
13. The biological activity can be stopped by autoclaving (121 °C; 20 min.) the test water or by adding a toxicant (e.g. sodium azide (NaN3) at 10-20 g/l, mercuric chloride (HgCl2) at 100 mg/l or formalin at 100 mg/l) or by gamma irradiation. If HgCl2 is used, it should be disposed of as toxic waste.
14. Classification as a reproductive toxicant is intended to be used for substances which have an intrinsic, specific property to produce an adverse effect on reproduction and substances shall not be so classified if such an effect is produced solely as a non-specific secondary consequence of other toxic effects.
